TYPE 2 DIABETES & HYPERTENSION

Understanding prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and their long-term health impact

The journey to diabetes is often slow and can take years to fully develop. Contributory risk factors include family history, genetics, carrying extra weight, especially around the middle, ethnicity (with South Asians, Black Africans, and those of African Caribbean descent being at greater risk), and various other dietary and lifestyle choices.

Prediabetes is a precursor to Type 2 diabetes, where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet in the diabetic range. While there are often no obvious symptoms, it signals that the body is struggling to regulate blood glucose levels properly. Without intervention, it can progress to Type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes insensitive to insulin, or when the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Symptoms may include excessive thirst, frequent urination particularly at night, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, mid afternoon energy dips and slow-healing wounds. However, many people may not show symptoms until the condition has significantly advanced.

Prediabetes and diabetes can have serious long-term health impacts if not managed. Elevated blood sugar levels over time can lead to complications such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, nerve damage (neuropathy), and kidney failure. They also increase the risk of vision loss due to retinal damage and conditions like glaucoma and cataracts. Uncontrolled diabetes may cause foot ulcers and, in severe cases, amputations. Additionally, it raises the likelihood of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease, as poor blood sugar management affects brain health. Studies have consistently shown that lifestyle interventions, such as weight loss, and regular physical activity, can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 58% (American Diabetes Association).
