As a Type 2 diabetes and pre diabetes nutritionist in London, Ruchi routinely work with clients aiming to reduce the progression of prediabetes or better manage their type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Effective diabetes management goes far beyond just monitoring blood sugar through a simple blood draw or using continuous glucose monitors (CGMs).
We look at all areas of your life. Factors such as dietary choices, stress, sleep quality, exercise, and lifestyle habits all play a critical role in controlling blood sugar levels and improving metabolic health. At Wellness with Ruchi, we work closely with clients to identify the root cause of their blood sugar imbalances and create an actionable path forward.

We have extensive experience of working with clients who are overweight, experiencing ongoing symptoms, have a family history of diabetes, are taking or considering weight-loss medications like Mounjaro or Ozempic, have multiple metabolic health diagnoses (such as hypertension, high cholesterol, anxiety), and are eager to prevent future complications while optimising their long-term health.

Our approach prioritises practical and effective strategies to stabilise your blood sugar levels and improve your long-term metabolic health. We are here to support you every step of the way.

Understanding prediabetes and type 2 diabetes for your long-term health
The journey to diabetes and contributing factors
The journey to diabetes is often slow and can take years to fully develop. Contributory risk factors include family history, genetics, carrying extra weight (especially around the middle), ethnicity (with South Asians, Black Africans, and those of African Caribbean descent being at greater risk), and various other diet and lifestyle choices.
Prediabetes: an opportunity for early intervention
Prediabetes is a precursor to Type 2 diabetes, where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet in the diabetic range. While there are often no obvious symptoms, it signals that the body is struggling to regulate blood glucose levels properly. Without intervention, it can progress to Type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes: understanding the condition
Type 2 diabetes is often preceded by insulin resistance, or when the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Symptoms may include excessive thirst, frequent urination particularly at night, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, mid afternoon energy dips and slow-healing wounds. However, many people may not show symptoms until the condition has significantly advanced. While this page focuses on Type 2 diabetes, it's important to note that Type 1 diabetes is a different condition (see below).
Type 1 diabetes: an autoimmune condition
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. People with Type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy to manage blood sugar levels, along with regular monitoring, with onset often occurring in childhood or adolescence, although it can develop at any age. While the causes are not fully understood, a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental triggers is thought to play a role. Functional medicine cannot replace insulin but can support overall health, optimise blood sugar stability, and reduce the risk of complications through personalised nutrition plans, lifestyle strategies, and targeted nutrient support.
The serious long term health impact of unmanaged diabetes
Prediabetes and diabetes can have serious long-term health impacts if not managed. Elevated blood sugar levels over time can lead to complications such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, nerve damage (neuropathy), fatty liver, kidney failure. They also increase the risk of vision loss due to retinal damage and conditions like glaucoma and cataracts. Uncontrolled diabetes may cause foot ulcers and, in severe cases, amputations. Additionally, it raises the likelihood of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease, as poor blood sugar management affects brain health. Studies have consistently shown that lifestyle interventions, such as weight management, and regular physical activity, can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 58% (American Diabetes Association) combined with stress and sleep management.

Take action now for your metabolic health
